NEW HAVEN, Conn. — SCSU Volleyball held a two-set lead at home Monday night but could not close out the University of Bridgeport, falling 3-2 in a non-conference match at Pelz Gymnasium. Bridgeport rallied for a 15-25, 15-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-13 victory. The Purple Knights improved to 2-2, while the Owls dropped to 6-2 overall.

SCSU controlled the opening two sets behind efficient attacking and aggressive serving, then saw its momentum slip as Bridgeport cleaned up its errors and forced a decisive fifth set. The Owls led 2-0 and were two points from closing the match in the third set. SCSU led 23-21 in the third after a kill by Sarah Stark, but Bridgeport scored four straight points — including a service ace by Camdyn Cieszkiewicz and two SCSU attack errors — to extend the match.

Kerrigan Habing led SCSU with 18 kills and 19 digs. Stark added 11 kills on .222 hitting and a team-high four blocks. Sydney Bennett chipped in eight kills and three blocks, hitting .200. Setter Kimi Mitchell posted a double-double with 35 assists and a match-high 21 digs, and added three service aces. Libero Sarah Henault recorded 20 digs, while Victoria Pascual had three aces and 10 digs.

As a team, SCSU finished with 56 kills, 11 aces, eight blocks and 90 digs, hitting .097 for the match. The Owls hit .135 in the first set and .250 in the second while limiting Bridgeport to negative hitting percentages in both opening frames.

The Owls opened the night with a dominant service run. Leading 12-11 in the first, Camilla Fernandez served six straight points, including three aces, to push the lead to 20-12. SCSU closed the set 25-15 on kills by Stark and Habing.

In the second, Mitchell served four straight points midway through the set, including two aces, to turn an 8-8 tie into a 13-8 advantage. SCSU never trailed again, closing with three straight points.

Southern will play the fifth game of its 10-game homestand, which will run through Saturday, Sept. 26, when it hosts Post on Friday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. at Pelz Gymnasium.
