NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Jenna Tammel (Spring Valley, Minn.) of the volleyball team and junior Joseph Poulsen (Oxford, Conn.) of the men’s cross country team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for September.
Tammel helped the Owls post a 10-3 record in the month of September. She led the team in kills (128) and service aces (22), while ranking second in digs (121) and hitting percentage (.241).
For her efforts, she was named the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week on Sept. 8. Tammel was also selected to the league’s weekly honor roll on three occasions during the month.
Poulsen jumped out of the gate with a stellar start to the 2009 cross country campaign. He won the Bryant Invitational on Sept. 4 with a time of 16:35 and earned Northeast-10 Conference Athlete of the Week honors for his effort. The next time out, he placed fourth overall at the Central Connecticut State Invitational to earn a spot on the league’s weekly honor roll.
Poulsen closed the month with a second place finish at the Connecticut College Invitational that saw him once again earn Athlete of the Week honors from the league.
For the second consecutive year, Comcast is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Month’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each month for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
