NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior starting pitcher
Toby Nylin (Pleasant Valley, Conn.) allowed zero earned runs and struck out six over seven innings on Sunday afternoon, but the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team was defeated by Bentley, 2-1, in Northeast-10 Conference play at DeFelice Field. Ricardo Sullivan tossed a complete-game four-hitter for Bentley. With the loss, SCSU falls to 12-11 (2-2 NE-10), while Bentley improves 9-16 (4-6 NE-10).
After six scoreless innings, Bentley struck for the only two runs it would need in the bottom of the seventh. James Roche knocked a one-out single through the left side and moved to second when Chris Hardy worked a walk. After a double steal put runners at second and third, Joe Nardi struck out for the second out. Garrett Stenhouse followed with a fly ball to left field which was dropped by freshman
Andrew Babb (Hopkinton, Mass.) to allow both runs to score.
SCSU got one run back in the top of the eighth. Junior shortstop
Mike Diaz (Monroe, Conn.) worked a one-out walk, moved to second on a groundout and would later score on a wild pitch to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. However, the Owls would get no closer, as Sullivan struck out junior center fielder
Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) to end the eighth and retired SCSU in order in the ninth.
Nylin started on the mound and took the loss (1-1) for SCSU. Over seven innings, he gave up two unearned runs on three hits, walked two and struck out six.
Sullivan went the distance on the hill and picked up the victory (2-1) for Bentley. He gave up one run on four hits, walked four, threw a wild pitch and struck out four.
The Owls return to action on Monday, March 31, when they travel to Assumption for a Northeast-10 contest. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Rocheleau Field in Worcester, Mass.
