McCafferty and Martha Lead Owls Past Assumption, 14-10

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – KellyAnne McCafferty (Durham, N.H.) and Grace Martha (Cheshire, Conn.) recorded their second consecutive hat-tricks as the Southern Connecticut State University lacrosse team grabbed their first win of the season over Assumption by the score of 14-10. The Owls were resilient as they came away with the win despite a few second half rallies by the Greyhounds.

Southern is now 1–10 overall and 1–6 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Assumption is 1–8 and 1–7 in the NE-10.

Elaina Heiple (Cheshire, Conn.), Jessica Kraszewski (West Haven, Conn.) and Marisa Ryan (Waterbury, Conn.) each tallied two goals a piece in the wining effort. McCafferty also added an assist to go along with her three goal performance.

Assumption got on the board early as they scored their first goal within the first two minutes of the game. However, Southern retaliated by scoring the next five goals to take a 5-1 lead with 20:18 remaining in the first half.

The Greyhounds cut the deficit to three before Heiple recorded her second goal of the game on an empty net.

The Owls would add two more goals in the last four minutes to take an 8-3 lead heading into halftime.

Within the first forty seconds of the second half, Martha increased the Owls lead by six.

After both teams exchanged goals, Assumption went on a rally as they cut the deficit to two with four consecutive goals.

Southern would regain control as they netted three straight. McCafferty added her second and third goals of the day. Ryan posted her second goal with 7:30 remaining in the game.

The Owls padded the lead with a late tally by Kraszewski as Southern recorded its first win by the score of 14-10.

The Owls return to action on Saturday, April 18 as they host Franklin Pierce in their last home contest of the season at Jess Dow Field.
