NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Greg Malen (Stamford, Conn.) was a perfect 4-for-4 on Monday night as the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team took a non-conference game against Post by the score of 8-3. The Owls needed just two innings to pull away, scoring three in the first and five in the fourth as they connected for 11 hits in the game. They are now 24-7-1 overall and remain 14-3 in the conference. Post fell to 13-17 with the loss.
Post got on the board first with a fielder's choice RBI by Brendan Berry but the lead wouldn't last long as the Owls grabbed a two-run lead in the bottom half of the inning.
Kyle Rosadino (Berwyn, Pa.) started things off with a single to center field. Matt Pessy (Greenwich, Conn.) advanced Rosadino to scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Rosadino later reached third on a passed ball and Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) walked to put runners on first and third. Rosadino then scored on an error by the second baseman as the Owls tied the game 1-1. Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.) would drive in two more runs on a single to center field.
Southern opened the game up in the bottom of the fourth. Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) led off with a triple to right field. Cody Sestito (Bethel, Conn.) walked the next at-bat and a bunt by Malen drove in Cleary. Rosadino then advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Pessy walked to load the bases. Geffert then stepped to the plate and hit a triple to center field, driving in three more runs. He then scored on a single by #A.J. Rouleau# (Westborough, Mass.) as Southern took a commanding 8-1 lead.
The Eagles added two more runs in the eighth but the deficit was too much to overcome as Southern claimed an 8-3 win.
Malen led the way offensively with four singles, a RBI and a run scored. Dorsey went 3-for-4 from the plate with two RBI, Rouleau had a two RBI game and scored once and Geffert drove in three runs, walked once and scored twice. Ed Bethke (Branford, Conn.) was awarded the win, throwing seven and a third innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits. Tyler Albrecht (Arlington, N.Y.) made an appearance in the eighth, going one and two-third innings without allowing a hit.
The Owls return to action on April 14 as they head cross-town to visit rival New Haven at 3:30 p.m.
