WORCESTER, Mass. – Julianna Molloy scored the game-winning goal 2:47 into overtime as the Assumption College women's lacrosse team defeated Southern Connecticut State University this evening, 10-9.
It was the second straight one-goal loss for the Owls. SCSU is now 3-11 overall and 1-9 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Assumption improved to 4-9 and 2-8.
Carolynn Keal (Southington, Conn.) had a game-high four points (three goals, one assist), while
Nicole Healey (Milford, Conn.) also had a hat trick for the Owls.
Jennifer McCarthy (Norwalk, Conn.) added two goals in the game.
Two goals from Healey and two from McCarthy gave the Owls a 4-0 lead roughly midway through the first half. The Greyhounds countered with three tallies before the end of the frame to trim the deficit to 4-3 at the break.
Assumption's run stretched into the second half and concluded with seven consecutive goals. After a goal from Keal, the Greyhounds quickly restored the three-goal lead.
Kennedy Sherman (Buchanan, N.Y.), Keal and Healey responded with three straight goals to tie the score at 8-8 with 3:38 left.
Meghan Cushing scored with 1:16 left in regulation to briefly put the hosts back in front, but Keal answered only 16 seconds later to force overtime.
Chelsea Callahan (Hamden, Conn.) stopped 13 shots in the contest.
The Owls are back in action on Saturday when they host No. 2 nationally ranked LeMoyne.
