Jonathan Volpe sets SCSU Record in the 1500 at the CCSU Blue Devil Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut Men's Outdoor Track & Field standout Jonathan Volpe broke the SCSU record in the 1500 with a time of 3:45.78 at Central Connecticut State University's Blue Devil Invitational The Owls also competed at day one of the James Barber/Jack Maloney Invitational.

Jonathan Volpe won the 1500m, breaking the SCSU record with a time of 3:45.78. That broke the previous record of 3:47.27 set by Terrell Patterson in 2022. Volpe's time ranks first in the NE10 and 38th in Division II.

Osaretin Osagie won the 110m Hurdles with a time of 14.61. Joe Nham came in second at 15.58.

Osagie also won the 400m Hurdles with a time of 53.11, a season-best mark that ranks first in the conference.

Nolan Freeman came in second in the 100m Dash with a time of 10.89. Jalil Pena placed sixth at 11.28, and Noah Conrod crossed the line at 11.32, good for eighth place.

Pena placed sixth in the 200m Dash with a time of 22.59.

Max Musial placed third in the 400m Dash at 49.00. Matt Kilmer followed in fifth at 49.62. Quinn Favorite and Malachy Murray placed sixth and seventh, with respective times of 49.86 and 50.43. Philip DePoutot came in ninth at 51.42.

Mateo Viviano came in second in the pole vault, clearing 4.30m. The Owls finished third overall in a field of 12 teams.

Lawrence Hicks won the High Jump, clearing 2.00m (6-06.75).

Cameron Belton continued his dominant season in the Shot Put, winning the event with a season-best throw of 18.08m (59-04.00). That mark ranks third in all of Division II. Natanael Barbosa also continued his impressive season with a second-place finish, throwing 16.25m (53-03.75). Leo Jolly placed third at 14.73m (48-04.00), and Jordan Ribeiro placed sixth at 13.47m (44.02.50). Christopher Bon Tempo finished in seventh, throwing 13.40m (43-11.75).

Belton also won the Discus, throwing 46.18m (151-06.00). Barbosa Torres placed second with a season best mark of 41.49m (136-01.00). Ribeiro placed fourth at 40.68m (133-05.00).

Jolly led the Owls in the Hammer Throw with a personal best throw of 45.71m (149-11). Ribeiro followed in eighth at 43.00m (141-01), and Bon Tempo placed 9th with a throw of 42.63m (139-10).

Holden Speed and Lawrence Hicks both picked up PRs in the Long Jump. Speed placed third, jumping 7.09m (23-03.25), which ranks 52nd in DII. Hicks finished in second with a mark of 7.25m (23-09.50), which ranks 28th nationally. JC Joyner placed 23rd, jumping 6.02m (19-09.00).

Speed also placed second in the Triple Jump with a mark of 13.92m (45-08.00). Joyner followed in third at 13.44m (44-01.25).

Drew Schwartz placed fifth in the Javelin Throw, throwing 47.43m (155-07).

SCSU finishes the Barber/Maloney Invitational tomorrow, where they will celebrate Senior Day at 10:00am.
