The 1975-76 Southern Connecticut State University men’s gymnastics team captured its second-straight NCAA Division II National Championship, and its third in four seasons after winning the 1972-73 and 1974-75 titles. Six individual and three team scoring records were broken over the course of the season.
Peter Kormann led the Owls during his junior season, claiming a program-record five individual NCAA Championships before becoming the first gymnast to win the All-Around championship at the NCAA Division II and Division I level, achieved in the same season.
Kormann also became the second SCSU gymnast to represent the United States at the Olympics and the first American gymnast to win a medal since 1932, when he collected the bronze in the Floor Exercise at the 1976 games. A seven-time All-American that season, Kormann was named the program’s first Gymnast of the Year by the United States Gymnastics Federation.
Kormann also won an EIGL Conference record of six titles plus one second-place finish. In addition to Kormann, senior captain Steve Randall tied for the EIGL Floor Exercise championship, while Dave Mesagno captured the Pommel Horse title. The trio headlined 16 All-American honors for the Owls that season. In addition to Kormann’s seven All-American awards, Ken Anderson earned two, while Tony Williams, Jeff Baker, Ken Haas, Victor Randazzo and Sam Schuh were also recognized. Head Coach Abie Grossfeld was also named the NCAA Division II National and Eastern Regional Coach of the Year.
