Jim Guercia, ’68, arrived at Southern after an outstanding scholastic career at New Haven’s Wilbur Cross High School. At Southern, he was a three-year starter as a baseball outfielder, helping to lead the Owls to the NCAA Atlantic Coast Championship at Yankee Stadium in his sophomore year. One of the last two-way players in football at Southern, Guercia played wingback and safety, and was a two-time All-New England player. He may be best remembered for an electrifying 95-yard kickoff return in the final 44 seconds of a 24-21 win over Hofstra University in 1965.
