Abie Grossfeld was a three-time national coach of the year. He led the Owls gymnastics team to three NCAA championships. He coached 29 individual NCAA champions, 126 All-Americans and four Nissen Award winners. He was head coach of the U.S. Olympic teams in 1972 at Munich and 1988 at Seoul, as well as the gold-medal-winning team in 1984 at Los Angeles. Grossfeld himself was a Big Ten and NCAA All-Around Champion at the University of Illinois and competed for the United States in the 1956 and 1960 Olympic Games.
