The 1990 Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team claimed the program’s second NCAA title in four years with a thrilling 1-0, penalty kick victory, over Seattle Pacific in Melbourne, Fla. That triumph capped a 22-0-1 season for the Owls, the first campaign in program history without a loss.
Â
Southern’s 22 victories remain a program single-season record. The Owls won their first six games before a draw against Furman. From there, the team capped the year with 16 straight victories, including convincing victories over Division I programs Boston College and Princeton. The Owls outscored their opponents by a staggering 95-13 mark during the year. SCSU also became the first NCAA Division I or Division II team to complete an unbeaten season and win a NCAA Championship in soccer.

In the championship game, both teams played through a scoreless regulation session and two overtime periods before the Owls claimed a 4-3 win on penalty kicks. Keeper Bo Oshoniyi registered the shutout, while Henrik Svartborn, John DeBrito, Larry Piturro and Nick Booth netted goals in the penalty kick session.
